Obituary

William Leroy Duff, Jr. passed away January 19, 2021 at age 82.

Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the years between the Korean and Vietnam wars. So the closest Bill ever came to combat was during his years of service as President of the University of Northern Colorado’s Faculty Senate and as a member of the UNC Board of Trustees.

As Dean of the College of Business Administration, he led the college to AACSB accreditation, oversaw the renovation of the business building, established its Executive Professor Program, directed the university’s first capital campaign and moved the college to early adoption of its computerized curriculum. At the same time, Bill moved to focus the college’s resources exclusively on high quality undergraduate business education by closing its graduate program. He taught at UNC for decades until his retirement.

Bill also served his community as a member of Greeley’s City Council, the Greeley Planning Commission and the Greeley Water and Sewer Board. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of Greeley Rotary, the Board of Directors of the Greeley Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Weld County, the UNC Foundation, Envision, High Plains Chautauqua and the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra.

He also served as a consultant to the U.S. State Department and the United Nations early in his career. In 1975, he took two years’ leave from UNC to work as a U.N. technical expert in Mbabane, Swaziland.

Bill hated pointless bureaucracy, thoughtless inefficiency and bad ideas born of good intentions. He loved his wives Arlie (1941-2002) and Kay, his two children, Suzie and Bill, and four grandchildren, Katie, Sophia, Jimmy and Alena. He admired and respected his children and he liked just about every dog he ever met. Bob, his Jack Russell Terrier, was his favorite canine companion.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, he asks that you spend some time reading one of his favorite books: Friedrich von Hayek’s Road to Serfdom, Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom or Matt Ridley’s The Origins of Virtue.

Bill, along with Jack Freese, sponsored my application for a graduate assistantship in the School of Business, 1981 – 1984. The assistantship enabled me to earn my Ph. D. in Statistics and a go on to a successful 35-year career in data analytics. Sadly, both Bill and Jack are now gone, just in the last 6 weeks. Thank you both and sincere condolences to the families!
