Obituary

Larry Gene Granlund, 81, of Greeley, Colorado, died on January 19, 2021, after a long battle with lung disease. He was born in Pasadena, California, on October 8, 1939, to Evald Ferdinand and Alvina Edith (Smith) Granlund.

He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and graduated from John Burroughs High School in Burbank. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served on the Admiral's Staff, Commander Carrier Div 7 on the USS Lexington. After discharge, he moved to Sacramento, California, where he attended American River College.

On March 2, 1963, he married Kathy Elaine (Ruger) at the first Baptist Church in Brighton, Colorado, and they made their home in Sacramento, California, where Larry went to work as a lending officer for Bank of America. When the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company offered him the position of manager of the northern area of California, the family moved to Redding.

In 1979, the family changed directions, moved to Greeley, Colorado, and purchased a grocery/convenience store. Larry also worked for the Greeley Tribune for 10 years.

Larry was an avid woodsman and fisherman. He and his boys were frequently off on a fishing marathon. He was much admired and respected for being a wonderful father to his own sons who loved him beyond measure, as well as those he mentored along the way.

Those who loved him best include survivors wife Kathy; son Gregory and wife Christine (Blum), granddaughter Katie and husband David (Burl), great-granddaughter Elena and great-grandson Gage, and grandson Eric, of Kansas; son Jeffrey and wife Susan (Beres), son Jon-Michael and wife Jennifer (Wood), of Greeley; special nephew Scott Spain and wife Mary (Meeves), brother Richard and wife Helen (Cranfill), of California; and nieces Karen Barbera and Eileen Lemon, and nephew Avery Barbera, of Nevada.

A memorial service will be held summer of 2021.
